“[A] native of the Sandwich Islands, who died at Cornwall, Connecticut, February 17, 1818, aged 26.” Obookiah relocated to New York after the murder of his parents. He prompted interest in the Hawaiian Islands which in turn led to the establishment of the American Mission there in 1820. Having converted to Christianity, he studied at the Foreign Mission School and soon took up preaching – especially to Hawaiian ex-pats living in the US. In a life characterised by misfortune, he died from typhus a mere nine years after arriving in at New York.
